I can answer that in three sentences. 1. simple, simple answer. Men were brought up by women so the women taught them to protect women. (we're quite smart you know) 2. In the cave times, women knew instinctly how to find edible roots, berries and plants that provided sustinance year round even when the men couldn't find meat to hunt or the hunts weren't succesful. 3. Women carry the children that guarrantee the survival of the species and need to be protected while nurturing those children. Not necessarily in that order.
