"If they were available and affordable...they would be widely in use."

They are, in some places.

The Redwood Coast Energy Authority of Eureka opened 10 electric vehicle charging stations across Humboldt County on Thursday.

“This is a major step forward for electric vehicles in Humboldt County because we really need the infrastructure up here. It’s a great way to tackle green house emissions,” RCEA’s Executive Director Matthew Marshall said before cutting a ribbon in front of two new charging stations at a ceremony in the St. Joseph Hospital parking lot.

Humboldt County, along with the rest of California, has been a swift adopter of electric vehicles, also known as EVs. The International Council on Clean Transportation, an independent nonprofit organization, ranked Eureka third in the nation for the share of EVs that made up new vehicles purchases in a 2015 study.

Additionally, California is home to almost half of all the nation’s plug-in EVs, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
