Stocks Close Sharply Up; Key Avg Regains 15,000 Mark
TOKYO (Dow Jones)-Tokyo stocks closed Tuesday's half-day session, the last day of the 1997 trading year, sharply higher on active short-covering following gains in New York stocks Monday. The Japanese market's mood wasn't particularly strong after the Nikkei average of 225 selected issues Monday set a new low for the year. But investors rushed to cover short positions on the market gains in the U.S., especially as they enter a five-day New Year holiday, traders said.

NIKKEI NET will not be updated on Dec 31 and Jan 2 through Jan 4 because of year-end and New Year's holidays; note it will be updated Jan 1.
