Sychro, I take it that you mean to be constructive when you say this: "It seems that there are some people (I'm not talking about you or anyone else on this board for that matter, so don't take offense) that are remarkably thin-skinned and sensitive when faced with suggestions and criticisms about China's economic and social policy". As a Chinese, I can understand the "face" issue and the sensitivity that seem to lead to your comments above. I too have the same kind of reaction, no matter how prepared I am, during a "perforamance appraisal" discussion with my boss when he pointed out my weaknesses unskillfully. My American colleages have the same problem too. To help us all do a better job in "coaching" we are using an outside consultant to develop four training modules just to teach the art of "feedback" for the company worldwide (not just China). These are: 1. How to solicit feedback 2. How to give feedback 3. How to receive feedback 4. How to use the feedback The last one will lead to the end product, as we call it, the "personal development plan". I bring this up to substantiate the point I wanted to make and that is everyone in this world has the same desease of "thin-skin". The response to the "advice" depends a lot on how it is given, and some people just didn't know HOW (although they meant to be good). On the other point relating to speed of reform, I feel that the pace that they are taking is right for China. People just need to learn to walk before they run. I agreee with you that small entrepreuners will be key to driving the economy forward. I picked this one up from the radio this morning on the way to work " We are seeing more and more graduate students from America wanting to come back to China to contribute to building a new China.......there are 540 new enterprises started by the returning gruaduates so far this year". Thought you would be pleased to hear this as well, as it is happening. Hope you had a wonderful holiday. RT
