IBM packages their own K6's because they have manufacturing capacity and because AMD is back-end equipment limited. IBM can ensure steady production output by doing packaging and testing themselves. It has nothing to do with packaging costs!

And secondly, the K6 has proven itself in the market for performance and reliability. Besides, a 25% less than Intel strategy is unnecessary on trailing edge performance (166, 200). In addition, the demand for the K6 has outpaced AMD's ability to deliver. Remember the Supply Demand model from Economics 101. That is why you're not seeing a 25% delta in the gray market.
