BT,
I am confident that the Penang facility of Seagate is not being closed any time in the near future. What is happening is that the hiring was frozen sometime in late October. In addition they will have a furlough of employees. The number I hear is 1,000. Finally, they have moved some employees from the Penang facility to the Butterworth drive facility where they could. There had been speculation that the facility would be closed as Seagate sought out cheaper venues. Insofar as slider fab they have facilities in Penanag, and Ipoh with a new plant coming up in Cebu, and a plant in Medan on the drawing boards (but on hold). There have been furloughs in Seagate's head stack assembly operation in Thailand but I havent been able to get an accurate number. I doubt if Seagate will outsource heads they can't use. They are just suffering from a capacity binge.
Best,
Stitch
