GM,

Re:The weakening economic growth is consequently pushing up the
unemployment rate. LG foresees the jobless rate soaring to 5.7 percent,
contradicting the government's target of 2.5 percent. Daewoo and Samsung
came up with 5.0 percent and Hyundai with 4.2-4.3 percent.

This is exactly what their economy needs right now, a purging of all inefficiencies by revamping of their entire economic structure. Will be painful, but remember here in the late 80's and the layoffs that came daily and look where we are now. I am pessimistic they will be able to get the job done though. In the U.S., we are a market driven society. I am not sure of Korea, but change in Japan is driven from the top. MOF etc. The needed changes are painful are come more easily when there are profits to be gained/lost. As it currently stands, govt. seats are to be gained/lost. Do you really think there is any incentive here?
