Rat, sounds about right
It took 50 years to go from $250 to $12K
from memory: I paid $300 tuition per semester in 1961 to go to SF State College [now State University]. Text books were expensive - some as much as $30 [?] - but since I also worked full time, affordable.

That low tuition was the only hand-out I ever got. Thank you, California tax payers!
PS: I made $2.56 per hour as a union mechanic. Rent for a 1-BR apartment on Pine St, a block from the Mark Hopkins, was $160.
