I never could quite figure out where the southernmost extent of the large Alaskan halibut are? I know at their Southern extension there's a Pacific halibut that doesn't get anywhere nearly as big. But I think it does get up to 80 pounds?

I wonder what species they caught? I expect it was a large northern one. 50 pounds is perfect eating size. Any larger than that and they get pretty tough. We caught one one time that was about 216 pounds and 6 feet tall and it was inedible.

The fish and wildlife people said it was a female about 60 years old. In my opinion anything over 100 pounds they should just let them go as those are all females and gigantic egg laying factories.

The California halibut or California flounder, Paralichthys californicus, is a large-tooth flounder native to the waters of the Pacific Coast of North America from the Quillayute River in Washington to Magdalena Bay in Baja California. It feeds near shore and is free swimming. It typically weighs 6 to 50 pounds (3 to 23 kg). It is much smaller than the larger and more northern-ranging Pacific halibut that can reach 300 pounds (140 kg

They say the record is 515 lbs, but I heard of one over 800??

Has your buddy caught other halibut there. I was always a big fisherman in the ocean and did a ton of it. Would you do me a favor and ask your buddy what he was trying to catch. I'm assuming he was bottom fishing. But maybe not, we use to catch a lot of halibut on our trolling gear.

I'm just curious as to what you catch at the bottom in that part of the Pacific Ocean.
