A shop floor audit of a major US auto manufacturer showed more than half of the 1700 embedded systems failed. Contact Jim West, project manager for Deloitte and Touche.

Manufacturers may be the least prepared for third-party year 2000 failures. They depend on parts built and assembled by suppliers, who in turn rely on other suppliers. A supply-chain failure could occur if just one supplier cannot produce a part because of a systems failure. Programmable logic controllers, robotics, paint and steel mixing, production scheduling, bill of material, and just-in-time inventory systems control synchronized production environments. A system failure could result in multiple plant closures and massive layoffs.

Costs of tackling the bug were soaring ... particularly concerning so-called "embedded" chips installed deep in manufacturing equipment. "The challenge isn't because it is intellectually difficult, but because there are just billions of things to be done. It's the sheer scale of the task and the relatively small number of people in the world qualified to do the work."

Industry's embedded systems to be hit hard by Year 2000. It is thought that industry will be hit hard by the millennium problem as entire manufacturing planning systems will have to be replaced as well as thousands of embedded control systems.Upgrades are not possible in many cases as systems have been heavily customised...

Control systems in power plants,T&D, and offices all depend on
"embedded software" that might fail at the turn of the century.
This "Year 2000 Problem" is quite different from the well-publicized Y2K problem in utility business software applications running on mainframe computers. The impact of embedded systems failure, while not known, could potentially be severe and widespread.

One in five embedded systems responsible for running critical processes in UK oil, petrochemical, power and aviation manufacturing firms will fail in the year 2000. "It's small and medium-sized factories and firms that we're really worried about," ... Some may not even be aware of the problem or if they are, they lack the financial and technical resources to put it right. EXPLOSION! ... Read the
example of what will happen at this one plant if it's fixed.

Topro to help prepare Bristol-Myers for Year 2000
PC Week Magazine Jan 12 '98 - Page 87
==============================================================

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. has contracted with Topro Inc., of Denver, for Y2K tools and compliance support for all it's "non-IT" systems, such as factory automation and control systems, at approximately 125 sites worldwide.

Topro has begun conducting a pilot plant project at a Bristol-Myers Squibb facility in New Brunswick, N.J. The pilot plant project is scheduled for completion next month (Feb '97).

James Ham, vice president of information management at Bristol-Myers Squibb, commented on the importance of addressing the year 2000 problem in all of Bristol's systems, not just those used for business processing.

My name is Janice Myint. As part of the Bristol-Meyers Squibb Year 2000 effort, there is a group focusing on P.I.E. (Process Control, Instrumentation and Environmentals). PIE is any machinery or equipment having an electronic component or interface that is used in research, quality operations, manufacturing processes, or facilities operations, including embedded systems. I am part of this group.

Solving the Year 2000 problem is especially important for pharmaceutical companies such as ours, particularly in the manufacture of our medicines that a great deal of the public use. And for us, not only are the computers affected, but perhaps more importantly, the embedded systems in our plants and laboratories are affected.

At this point in time, I am looking for information and looking to open up lines of communication. I have found a great deal of information for the computer problem, but it has been more difficult to find information for my effort.

If there is anyone who can provide information on embedded systems -- process control, etc or can point me in the right direction to look, it would be greatly appreciated.
