WebTV is cool.
I just got for my son for Xmas. For $179 and $19.99 moth is great deal. It looks very good on 32" TV. 56K upgrade is free.

Are we going to see more like this in 98?

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 31, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) has beta shipped its recently-announced GX 550 ATM core switch which features one of the industry's first "smart core" combining the scalability and capacity of a core switch with the intelligence, service capability and cost-effectiveness of an edge switch.

Williams Communications, a Tulsa, OK-based provider of multimedia services, has the GX 550 installed in its labs and is the first beta test site for the switch. Through its Vyvx business unit, Williams is the nation's largest provider of live television transmission services.

"We congratulate Ascend on delivery of the GX 550 beta. In testing, the GX 550 was up and running and passing live data in less than one hour," said Joe Turcotte, Vice President, Engineering and Operations for Williams Network. "In addition to adding top speed and capacity to the backbone, the GX 550 provides the necessary high-availability levels which are critical at the network core. This is a true breakthrough."

This shipment of the GX 550 first beta meets the December milestone set by Ascend when it announced the switch in October, 1997. The GX 550, which has received a positive reception from both Ascend customers and the industry at large, will ship to production networks on schedule in Q1, 1998.

"We are pleased to deliver the GX 550 to Williams," said Jeff Kiel, Ascend Senior Manager, Product Marketing, Core Systems Division. "The GX 550 "smart core" ATM switch offers Williams the features and functions necessary to meet their ever-growing volumes of data traffic."
