20 years from now, as the Ice Age begins, we'll be eating each other.

Should we be judged by our times even if we know better? Washington and Jefferson knew better, they just didn't want to give up their wealth and their control and as you rightly point out in their day and age the viciousness of it and the cruelty was sort of the norm of the day and so people could endure it. But I would still argue if they knew better they should have changed.

I do think there's a bit of difference between owning slaves and eating meat. But on the other hand I may just be rationalizing. But you are quite correct to think in terms of time. I see so few people that do that and it drives me nuts. You can only compare people in their own time.

The great philosophers of ancient Greece also defended slaves and people bring that up. I argue inasmuch as they were the first great civilization and democracy that we should look at their accomplishments and considering the time they lived in, and not at the things they didn't accomplish. And the same is probably true of Jefferson Washington, etc.

The good news is that the moral arrow of time seems to be going to the future. My own theory on that is that it has to do with the increased ability of the human species to replace the animal brain with the new existential brain capable of abstract thought. Our animal brain thinks in terms of a concrete reality and is most comfortable in that reality.

By way of explanation, we are born knowing how to speak, but it is very difficult and takes a lot of time for us to learn to read and write and count and do math. And this is true for all abstract thought, logic, but the more one practices the better they get at it. Today we practice abstract thought more than anyone ever has in history and so no one even considers not only slavery, or segregation as being reasonable, but also more esoteric things like gay marriage and animal rights.
