Clark,

Each Operating System variation imposed on MSFT by Justice, PC vendors, etc raises the cost of supporting the OS, increases the probability of failures / incorrect results / etc.; and generally results in the consumer paying a higher price for an inferiour product.

While it's nice for DOJ to look out for consumers, it defies all logic to see how beating up on MSFT will meet that objective. They're a 10 year old company with some very enthusiastic if inexperienced managers. It would be preferable, IMO, to see a less confrontational position exhibited by all parties.

In a country where ADM is widely believed to have blatantly violated every principle of fair play and barely gets its wrist slapped, I'm surprised that MSFT doesn't compete with them to become the largest contributors to the various political organizations. Isn't corruption just a cost of doing business for some companies?
;-)

Seriously, this is a very competitive marketplace. That's where the battles should be won and lost. Even IBM was nearly brought to its knees.

Ian.

Clark, > I do object to strong arm tactics< Exactly.
Imagine the uproar if McDonalds refused to sell Big Macs without
french fries, if the phone company threatened to disconnect
service, unless you subscribe to caller ID.
