It is true that the law for Social Security calls for payments to be cut as the nominal trust fund goes to zero.

God, I hope I'm still around the first time they do that. Just to watch the heads explode.

When the Disability Trust was scheduled to run out this year, I was furious that Ryan took that 150 Billion from SS to bail it out. Not because of taking it from SS, but I thought it was a great time to put people on notice there are upcoming problems.

Thomas Sowell has said he thinks it is beyond the point of no return, which I agree about. He said, "Well, maybe 5% chance something happens that pulls us out." I can't envision it. It would be a very long stretch for that many Americans to suddenly wake up and say, "Oh, we're going to change our lives, hopes, dreams, expectations, at the last minute..."

I wonder whether, today, if we were creating a new Constitution, anything could be done to prevent the nation from finding itself in this kind of mess 200 years hence? Or is it just endemic to the planet or the Universe....
