I think we have to have some kind of government health care for those who simply are not going to be able to take care of themselves.

I've thought for at least ten years that we need a government program to provide primary care to the poor and indigent. Maybe 250 walk-in clinics where health care is for the uninsured/Medicaid patients only, complete with generic prescriptions filled on the spot. Physicians and nurses paid ordinary, market-rate pay. Essential services like basic lab/x-ray/ultrasound. People needing more advanced imaging are sent to a different facility by agreement. No reimbursement for transportation.

And this is where the indigent/poor/others get primary care, and no place else.

You can do stuff like this cheap by avoiding government bureaucracy. But there is no desire to figure alternatives to the current system.
