A refurbished 4s being state of the art enough for the entry level Indian buyer.

Why buy a refurbished phone, when a brand new phone cost - from another manufacturer - can be bought for less?

A lot of Indians and Indian phone manufacturers apparently disagree and thus have prohibited Apple from even attempting such a strategy.

As for my family, we have a gifted ZTE android in the drawer, while my kid uses a 4s.

A premium segment of smartphone sales exists today and numbers in the hundreds of millions per year. People make the decision to pay more than they would otherwise need to every day to obtain an iPhone for various reasons. Sure the proportion of those able and willing to do so in India is lower than almost anywhere else, but no one is looking at the entire India smartphone market as being addressable by Apple's current price points.
