Bears are very smart and powerful. I noticed one standing on two legs beneath an evergreen. It was moving and it's head was hidden beneath some lower branches. I thought maybe it was scratching itself on the ruff bark. Later I walked over to the tree and noted the bark had been stripped away and the tree itself was deeply slashed. The area was approximately 4" wide X 18" long. Sap was curdling out of the wound. I tasted it and it was quite sweet and the flavor wasn't objectionable. That was two years ago. This year I noticed the same bear or another did the same to the opposite side of the tree. Kind of remarkable that they are able to grab a sweet dessert at will.
