Slacker, as you say, the 10-year chart has been a kind metric for Apple stock --- at least at first glance. Apple is up almost exactly 10x during that time.

However, the almost the entire gain for Apple was concentrated in the window of January '09 to September '12. If you bought at any time in the other than that 3.75 year window, odds are you've lost money.

Amazon has had 2.5x the gain of Apple during those 10 years, with a much larger window of uptrend. Facebook only has a five year chart, but it has a more consistent uptrend.

As a stock investor/trader the duration and consistency of the uptrend is at least as important as its magnitude. A stock that has a history of crash-and-burn, with narrow windows of uptrend followed by severe downdrafts, has less value than a more consistent gainer.
