By Seattle Times staff An oil train has derailed and is on fire in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland. Peter Murphey, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, confirmed that two train cars are on fire, KATU-TV is reporting. However, he said it is too early to confirm any more details. Justin Jacobs, a Union Pacific spokesman, told to The Oregonian that the derailed train was operated by his company. “I can confirm it’s ours,” Jacobs said. Jacobs said he had no other information immediately. KOIN-TV reports witnesses said multiple cars derailed and smoke and flames can be seen in downtown Mosier, Ore. Smoke can also be seen from a nearby weather skycam. Schools in Mosier are being evacuated. A notice alerting Mosier residents of a sewer emergency was posted on the city’s website. “Please do not flush your toilets or run water down sinks or tubs,” it says. The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed westbound Interstate 84 at The Dalles. Eastbound lanes are closed at Mosier, KOIN-TV reports.
