The third quarter is traditionally Qdel's strongest w/ a large % of sales coming from strep A tests - They usually take about 3 1/2 weeks after the end of the quarter to report, so I look for earnings to be announced during the week of 1-19-98. Two years ago, they made a "pre-announcement" when it was clear that earnings would be lower than expected - the stock was selling at around $7/sh back then and it dropped to around $5 when the announcement was made - If we make it past the first week in January without such announcement, I will be happy. Frankly, I don't expect any such announcement this quarter, since Qdel advertised heavily in the San Diego paper in early 9-97 for many (30+ as I recall) manufacturing employees- based on this info, I feel fairly certain that they certainly anticipated a strong 3rd quarter. For all you old timers out there, you know this isn't the first time this stock has been beaten up for no apparent reason- I hope it is the last time though. I think year end tax selling and general weakness in this sector has hurt - look at Salv, Cmtr, and triby (especially) - I wouldn't trade my Qdel investment for any of these other companies - I look for a strong 3rd quarter , maybe even in the range of $0.10 /sh - If my math is accurate, that would be about $2.4 million in profit for the qtr. I think that is doable w/ a 25% increase in revenue over 3rd qtr of FY 97 ($12.4 million x 1.25 = $15.5 million). Perhaps I'm being too optimistic but I think that this company will produce some good numbers this time around - time will tell. PS - the warrants are a steal at 13/16ths!!!
