RE: Stock activity based upon end of year selling.

Is it possible that we will see some short covering on Friday? I am assuming that anyone short this stock would try to wait until the new year to cover, thus avoiding capital gains in 1997 (assuming, of course, they want to cover.)

What impact will the "wash" rule have during the next month? Although tax selling is now over, the wash rule may prevent many who have already sold for tax reasons from buying. Would a short be inclined to cover while other would-be buyers wait for their 30 days to pass, thus allowing the shorts to cover at an artificially lower price.
