David Reynolds' biography of John Brown documents the same phenomenon leading up to the Civil War: a culture of mob violence in the South which cowed Northerners and abolitionists, who feared Southern violence. A Senator - Charles Sumner - famously got caned on the Senate floor. Missourians with their long knives symbolized Southern violence before the Civil War. There was a genuine fear.

Until John Brown gave the North a martyr.

The Left today deliberates from a position of implied, or not so implied, violence. One day people will have enough and somebody will stand up and say "No!", and it will be a tidal wave, IMO.
