**OT** Re:NSCP did not leverage a monopoly position on one area to gain their dominant position in browsers MSFT achieved its dominant market share in browsers primarily through competition (READ:PRICE=FREE) and not through the "leveraging of their monopoly", an old standby of govt. demagogues who want to topple the leader for no other reason than they think it should be a more even playing field. When MSFT released Windows 95, all they had to go along as a browser was IE 2.0, pretty poor by any gauge. However, since the release of Win95, most of the migration to IE 3.0 and IE 4.0 has come not through the regular distribution channels, i.e. Packaged w/ Win95. Rather, people have actually chosen to get a much better browser form MSFT than NSCP on the web. And here's the kicker, it's FREE! The govts. claim that MSFT is hurting competition is ludicrous. If I had spent $40 for each version of IE as NSCP would have you do, I would be out several hundred $'s. This is their way of helping consumers!?!? Please note that I do understand that NSCP's presence has made for a much better and cheaper browser from MSFT than we otherwise would have had. However, MSFT is winning employing NSCP's original tactics and now NSCP is crying foul. Message to Andreesen and Clark: Build a better browser and I will come; stop the da** whining. MSFT is beating you at your own game and now it's unfair?!?! There are 2 issues here IMO. The first is the alleged armtwisting of OEM's. On this part I offer no argument. MSFT should not be able to continue these practices. The 2nd point is the govts. intrusion into MSFT's affairs in terms of how they should package the browser w/in the OS going forward . Here, the govt. should keep their hands off. MSFT is simply merging the OS and the browser,an integration that if not implemented now, will occur sometime in the future. It's inevitable. And Uncle Sam should keep his hands to himself since in this case, he has no F***ing clue as to what he is talking about. If this is allowed to stand, it's pretty god**** scary since we now have the govt. creating business plans for our companies. Brian
