Pass pass - that is not necessarily a valid argument. Granted that the 3 Korean conglomerates are into many facets of technologies from micros to heavy machineries, the taiwanese fabs are a force to reckon with (I don't know the exact # and %, but the taiwanese manufactures a great proportion of notebooks as we speak.) They are not household names because they do OEM deals. More important, IMHO, the taiwanese may continue its hi-tech buildup despite the short term unprofitability - so long as its economy doesn't cave in like S Korea - because it is strategically vital for its political health in term of negotiating unification with China.

Having said that, CYMI is likely to be under pressure since the entire semi cap sector is in tormoil right now (note: I don't own CYMI since my marginalized portfolio is deep under water at the present time <sg>)

You may be misinterpreting the news out of Korea. They are reducing capital spending, but are nevertheless still spending. No breaking ground for new fab shells, but necessary upgrades to keep pace in DRAM and semiconductors in general. They will not be closing fabs. 64Mb DRAM will not be profitable now, but even less so with a die size over 100mm&#178. The Koreans will still purchase DUV equipment, because it is almost mandatory for them to stay in business over the long-term.

RE: the Taiwanese

They will take this opportunity to assert themselves against the Japanese and Koreans. If they continue to spend into the downturn, they gain market share on the Japanese and Koreans. This is their strategic goal.

RE:Maybe that's why the stock is so depressed.

Yes, the news out of Korea and Japan sure isn't helping. :-)

Yes, pass pass the world is ending and all future technological advances will be put on hold indefinately.

Look at the SOX, CYMI, AMAT and SVGI - maybe that's why CYMER is acting the way it is.

Caution is needed but let's not get carried away.... :-)

Pssssst.... look what's happening in Europe and North America?
