Don, Good idea for a thread. Can I share a long term story with you, with contemporary implications? In the 1960s my wife was in high school in Rogue River, OR. She was given a hundred bucks for good grades one time. She took it down to the new local bank, whose facilities were literally nothing more than a trailer/mobile home. She bought ten shares, ten bucks apiece, in Valley of the Rogue Bank (VRBA). She held on to them. Today she has over 1600 shares (has never purchased any more), after having given several hundred away to her mother. We also give 10 shares to each niece and nephew for Xmas each year. This stock is now trading in the 10 to 10.5 range. It pays @ 2.5% div/year and just keeps growing and splitting and splitting and growing. Best time to buy it would have been a few weeks ago when it dropped below 9, today, on a down, down market day, it just hit a new high of 10.75. It is the largest bank in southern Oregon, an area filling up with retirees fleeing California. I think it is a good long term investment.
Best, John
