We often think Korea's problem is that they didn't spend right. No! Based on my understanding of Koreans, they are very careful of how to spend money. Their problem is: They sell their products too cheaply. For example, I got a bunch of SprintPCS phones made by Samsung as gifts, after rebates and stuff, it's $69 for a pure digital CDMA phone! Can Samsung still make a penny after buying chips from QCOM?

It would be very easy to fix if the crisis were due to careless spending. Also, the Koreans can't afford to raise the product prices much because they are afraid of losing market share. So the turnaround will be long and painful, IMF realized this and gave in to the Koreans.
