---------------------- U.S. STOCKS -----------------------------
U.S. stocks ended sharply higher on Tuesday as investors
extended their year-end buying spree.
With concern over South Korea's financial crisis easing,
market players swooped in to buy stocks that had stumbled earlier
in the month, including technology and financial shares.
The Dow finished up unofficially 123.56 points, or 1.59
percent, at 7915.97.
----------------U.S. FINANCIAL MARKETS--------------------------
The dollar tiptoed higher against the yen but slipped against
the mark in thinned, year-end dealings described as being largely
devoid of key fundamental news, traders said.
"On December 30, one really cannot offer any fundamental
explanation for any move," said Christer Stefansson, a trader at
Swedbank, adding that trading volume was limited.
----------------------- MEXICO ---------------------------------
Mexican stocks posted sharp gains for the fourth day in a row
on Tuesday, rising in tandem with Wall Street and boosted by
foreign investors dressing up their portfolios before the
year-end, dealers said said. "(Mutual) funds closed their books
today, so it was best for the market to close up, driven by
buying," Jorge Gonzalez, an analyst with the Valmex brokerage,
told Reuters.
The leading-share IPC index finished 85.83 points
higher, or 1.68 percent, at 5206.44.
----------------------- CANADA ---------------------------------
Toronto stocks gained for a second day as confidence continued
to grow that the Asian crisis had been brought under control.
Toronto Stock Exchange's key 300 Composite Index gained
41.25 points, or 0.6 percent, in light trading of 58.1 million
shares worth $906.2 million.
----------------------- LONDON ---------------------------------
UK's FTSE 100 ended up four percent on Tuesday but an absence
of genuine investor interest saw it drift off its day's high,
dealers said.
The FTSE 100 closed up 19.9 points at 5,132.3, having reached
5,144.8 in mid-afternoon trade, but volume was a lowly 344 million
shares.
---------------------- FRANKFURT -------------------------------
German shares drifted one percent lower on Tuesday, the final
trading day of 1997, hit by modest profit taking as some investors
sought to lock in gains after a year which saw the DAX index climb
47 percent.
The Xetra DAX index, which reflects all-day computer trade,
ended an abbreviated trading session 41.72 points lower at
4,224.30 -- a dramatic increase from the DAX's end-1996 level of
2,880.07 but still short of the record high of 4,477.70 set on
July 31.
------------------------ TOKYO ---------------------------------
Tokyo stocks swept higher in thin pre-holiday trade on
Tuesday, as sentiment was brightened by a surge in Wall Street
stocks overnight, brokers said.
Tuesday was the last trading day for 1997, and was a half-day
session. The market will reopen on January 5.
-----------------------ADR REPORT-------------------------------
South Korean ADRs were trading lower in quiet trading a day
after the global banking community agreed to help the troubled
country with its short-term debt, dealers said Tuesday.
"They're trading lower than the day before," said one of them.
"The local market is closed until next week so we really don't
know how it's going to react to the news.
