USDA WEEKLY CROP PROGRESS REPORT BEARISH ALL THE WAY AROUND BY DTN/Progressive Farmer | June 13, 2016
Corn emergence neared 100% and soybean planting hit 92% during the week ended June 12, according to the USDA Crop Progress report released Monday.
Corn is 96% emerged nationwide, compared to 90% last week, 95% last year and a five-year average of 94%. Corn condition stayed steady at 75% good to excellent.
“USDA said 75% of the corn crop was rated good to excellent, resulting in a DTN Corn Condition Index of 181,” said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. “DTN’s index was up from 176 a year ago and above the five-year average of 169. Monday’s report is bearish for corn.”
Soybeans were 92% planted, compared to 83% last week, 85% last year and an 87% average. Soybean emergence is estimated at 79%, compared to 65% last week, 72% last year and a 72% five-year average. Soybean conditions improved to 74% good to excellent, compared to 72% last week.
“These condition ratings resulted in a DTN Soybean Condition Index of 177,” Hultman said. “DTN’s index is up from 165 a year ago and is also above the five-year average of 163. Monday’s report is bearish for soybeans.”
Winter wheat is 96% headed and 11% harvested, compared to 91% and 2% last week, 95% and 9% last year and 89% and 18% on average. Winter wheat condition decreased slightly to 61% good to excellent, compared to 62% last week.
“This resulted in a one-point decrease in the DTN Winter Wheat Condition Index to 153,” Hultman said. “DTN’s index is up from 100 a year ago and well above the five-year average of 63. Monday’s report is bearish for winter wheat.”
Spring wheat condition held steady at 79% good to excellent. “The DTN Spring Wheat Condition Index stayed at 186. DTN’s index is up from 172 a year ago and also above the five-year average of 172. Monday’s report is bearish for spring wheat,” Hultman said.
Cotton is 89% planted, compared to 75% last week, 88% last year and an 83% average. Cotton squaring is at 13%, compared to 7% last week, 11% last year and a 13% average. Cotton condition improved to 53% good to excellent, compared to 47% last week. Rice is 99% emerged, compared to 94% last week, 99% last year and a 96% average. Rice condition improved slightly to 68% good to excellent from 67% last week.
Sorghum is 76% planted compared to 58% last week, 67% last year and a 75% average. Sorghum is 14% headed, compared to 9% last year and a 16% average. Sorghum condition was rated for the first time this growing season at 73% good to excellent.
Oats are 52% headed, compared to 38% last week, 47% last year and a 46% average. Oats condition decreased slightly to 70% good to excellent, compared to 71% last week.
Barley is 95% emerged, compared to 93% last week, 100% last year, and 89% on average. Barley condition held steady at 78% good to excellent.

Colorado
Fieldwork accelerated while development of crops was pushed in many localities amidst an abundance of heat units and increasing soil temperatures. With the ascent of temperatures, dry spots began to emerge in several localities. Days suitable for field work were 6.5 days, up from the previous week’s 6.0 days. Topsoil moisture was 2% very short, 11% short, 77% adequate and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture was 3% very short, 10% short, 81% adequate and 6% surplus. Barley headed was 6% with 13% the five year average. Barley condition was 14% fair, 51% good and 35% excellent. Corn emerged was 96% with 91% being the five year average. Corn condition was 1% poor, 18% fair, 65% good and 16% excellent. Sorghum was 66% planted with a five year average of 58%. Sorghum emerged was 22% with 19% being the five year average. Spring wheat is 96% emerged with a five year of 98%. Spring wheat headed is 6% with 17% being the five year average. Spring wheat condition is 6% fair, 85% good and 9% excellent. Winter wheat headed is 96% with a five year average of 90%. Winter wheat turning color is 35% and a five year average of 33%. Winter wheat condition is 1% very poor, 8% poor, 22% fair, 55% good and 14% excellent.
Iowa
Sunny and hot weather spurred growth and fieldwork progress during the week. Due to the spotty nature of recent rains, many parts of the State would welcome rain, while other areas have adequate moisture. Statewide, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, the second highest number of days suitable so far this year. Topsoil moisture levels rated 0% very short, 12% short, 82% adequate and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 0% very short, 7% short, 85% adequate and 8% surplus. Virtually all of Iowa’s corn crop has emerged. Eighty percent of the corn crop was rated in good-to-excellent condition. Soybean planting reached 98% complete, two weeks ahead of last year and 13 days ahead of the five-year average. Soybean emergence reached 91%, 10 days ahead of both last year and the average. Soybean condition rated 81% good to excellent this week. Oats headed reached 60% this week, five days ahead of last year and six days ahead of normal. Oat condition rated 82% good to excellent.
Kansas
Temperatures were 6 to 8 degrees above normal across most of the state this past week. Rainfall amounts of up to 1 inch were reported in the west, with the rest remaining dry. Winter wheat harvest gained momentum in the south. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 2% very short, 17% short, 76% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 2% very short, 12% short, 82% adequate and 4% surplus. Winter wheat condition was rated 61% good to excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 92%, ahead of 76% last year and the five-year average of 75%. Harvested was 5%, near 1% last year, but behind 15% average. Corn condition was rated 70% good to excellent. Corn emerged was 96%, ahead of 86% last year, and near 95% average. Silking was 1%, equal to the average. Soybean condition was rated 67% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 75%, well ahead of 50% last year, but near 77% average. Emerged was 40%, ahead of 27% last year, but behind 59% average. Sorghum condition was rated 74% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 63%, ahead of 50% last year, but near 64% average. Headed was 1%, near 0% both last year and average. Cotton condition was rated 62% good to excellent. Cotton planted was 56%, behind 72% last year, and well behind 80% average. Squaring was 1%, near 0% both last year and average.
Missouri
Temperatures for the state averaged 74.5 degrees, 3.2 degrees above normal this past week. Precipitation averaged 0.03 inch statewide, 0.99 inch below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 25% short, 66% adequate and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 14% short, 79% adequate and 4% surplus. Corn condition was rated 72% good to excellent. Soybean planting progressed to 84% complete, compared to 70% for the five-year average, and soybeans emerged progressed to 64% complete, 9 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 64% good to excellent. Sorghum planting progressed to 87% complete. Winter wheat condition was rated 60% good to excellent.
Nebraska
Hot, dry and windy conditions dried soils and allowed most of the remaining acres to be planted this past week. Rainfall was limited to what fell on Sunday in central and western areas. Amounts varied, but totals were less than an inch in most areas. Temperatures averaged 6 to 8 degrees above normal. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 23% short, 70% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 12% short, 82% adequate and 6% surplus. Corn emerged was 99%, near the five-year average of 97%. Corn condition was rated 79% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 98%, ahead of 90% average, and emerged was 71%, ahead of 60% average. Sorghum condition was rated 85% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 97%, near 96% average, and emerged was 84%, near 86% average. Soybeans condition was rated 79% good to excellent. Winter wheat headed was 89%, near 87% average, and coloring was 37%, ahead of 26% average. Winter wheat condition was rated 64% good to excellent.
South Dakota
The warmest temperatures of the season reported across most of the state this past week. High heat and humidity produced little in the way of precipitation, which was particularly needed in the northeast and west. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5% very short, 17% short, 71% adequate and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 14% short, 78% adequate and 4% surplus. Winter wheat headed was 90% and coloring was 9%. Winter wheat condition was rated 71% good to excellent. Corn emerged was 94%, near the average of 92%. Corn condition was rated 72% good to excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 83% and headed was 28%, ahead of 21% average headed. Spring wheat condition was rated 68% good to excellent. Soybeans planted were 93% and emerged were 80%, ahead of 70% average. Soybeans condition was rated 75% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 92%, ahead of 74% average, and emerged was 53%, ahead of 36% average. Sorghum condition was rated 81% good to excellent.
