It was just that much fewer went East vs West. So many more East Europeans died at the Berlin Wall.
Yes, but wasn't the intent of the Berlin wall to keep people in?

Also, if I try to sneak into a jail I suppose I would be apprehended, although I suppose that also doesn't happen as often as people who want to sneak out.

While with other barriers, the intent is to keep people out.
And E Berlin was not a jail. East Berliners were free to travel all over East Germany.
The comparison does fall apart - but I meant to compare the property of the intent to keep people in, not so much other aspects.
