Brent, As I've said before, maybe it's my lack of imagination but a dialup content provider at 56k seems to me an outmoded business model with nowhere to go. To morph themselves into something else, there has to be something else to morph into. What? A wide-bandwidth cable internet company? The Time-Warner-USW service, designed for cable, has a better shot. Could they morph into a gigantic web site? Yes, but so what? That would make them indistinguishable from anything else on the web. I also think if there were the defensible niche you mention, it would already be obvious, instead of pennies here and pennies there from things like Cybermeals. Again, maybe it's just my lack of imagination, but I don't see a direction long-term for AOL.
Best
-Steve

Brent, I don't know anyone who has AOL that dosen't click NO THANKS when an ad comes up. This stock is smoke and mirrors and anyone who buys the stock at these levels will get burned in the future. Many local providers offers much better service for internet access. The Street is too stupid or should I say the Street is smart and the buying public is too stupid to understand. I would love for the SMUT that is exchanged over AOL to be investigated by the government.......Someone should take this garbage to court. DJF

Happy new year Brent -- and guess what, I think you got it 180 degrees wrong once again.

A middleman that helps sort out and make sense of the anarchy in cyberspace is exactly what most mainstream consumers are looking for.

Dale raised a similar point and I answered his post this way:
