That’s occurring right now in the natural graphite market. This market was previously driven by several industrial applications and, in particular, refractories for the global steel industry. That kept graphite prices largely in lockstep with other steelmaking components such as iron ore. While usage by steelmakers still predominates the graphite market, it is high-tech applications such as battery anodes that are becoming the demand driver for the mineral. Graphite in lithium-ion batteries used to account for only 9% of global graphite demand. But now it represents about 25% of graphite demand and that proportion is expanding rapidly. Here we’re not only talking about batteries for electric-powered vehicles, but also large-scale energy storage. Think Tesla’s Powerwall. Suppliers Also Changing Change is also coming to the supply side of the graphite equation. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, China is still the dominant supplier. It provides about two-thirds of global production of natural graphite (flake and amorphous). Other major producers and exporters of graphite are North Korea and Brazil. The world’s leading importer of natural graphite over the last decade has been the United States. The status quo doesn’t sit well with the up-and-coming users like Tesla. These companies would prefer a more local, greener and more secure supply of natural graphite. Nouveau Monde It owns the Matawinie graphite property located in the Saint-Michel-des-Saints area north of Montreal. Matawinie is located about 120 km east of Imerys Graphite & Carbon’s Lac-des-Îles mine. This is the only currently producing graphite mine in North America. Nouveau Monde intends to become a leading supplier of flake graphite for North America’s rapidly growing lithium-ion battery market. Flake graphite, according to Benchmark Minerals , makes up about 45% of global supply. This is the type of graphite mainly used in electronic devices and lithium-ion batteries. So it’s just what users like Tesla will be looking for. This type of graphite is sold at differing price levels, depending on the size and purity of the flakes. Prices range from about $2,300 per ton for “jumbo” flakes to about $1,200 per ton for “fine” flakes, which are over 50-mesh and under 100-mesh in size. This bodes well for Nouveau Monde. It is a leader among its peers in the purity of its graphite (97.4%-98.5% after flotation only) and the percentage of large flakes (50%-60%). A “Robust” PEA Nouveau Monde’s recently released “robust” preliminary economic assessment for the West zone of the Tony claim block of its property was very encouraging. The PEA came only four months after the release of the company’s mineral resource estimate for Matawinie’s West Zone of the Tony block. The recently delivered PEA said the deposit has in-pit resources of 22.3 million indicated tonnes of 4.3% graphite and 15.5 million inferred tonnes of 4.6% graphite. Some other highlights of the PEA include: Pre-tax Net Present Value (NPV) of $403.7 million at an 8% discount rate; After-tax NPV of $237.0 million at an 8% discount rate; Pre-tax Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 31.2%; After-tax IRR of 24.7%; Life of Mine (LOM) of 25.7 years; Mine Pay Back estimated at 2.9 years (Pre Tax); Mine Pay Back estimated at 3.5 years (After Tax); LOM Revenue of $2,430.9 million (Life of Mine revenue); LOM Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) of $1,586.7 million; Initial Capital Costs (Capex) of $144.5 million (including contingency of $22.4 million); Operating Expenditures (Opex) of $32.95 million per year or $660 per tonne of concentrate; Average sales price of graphite concentrate at $1,492 USD per tonne Nouveau Monde has also identified two other deposits on its property the anomaly: the South-West zone and South-East zone. Total resources for these two zones stand at 26.3 million indicated tonnes of 3.7% graphite, and 19.2 million inferred tonnes of 3.7% graphite. Bottom line here: Nouveau Monde is sitting on what may be one of the largest graphite deposits in North America. And it should become a graphite producer by 2021. That “change” will be a good thing for investors.investorintel.com
