Jane,

Oxford's Clarendon Press has no peer in the realm of Classical studies. The title page of every book has the the inscription Dominus Illuminatio Mea, which shows where the bias might be, if there is one. The book from which that quote was taken was first published in 1937.

There are indeed many places in the world that could celebrate the completion of sowing in December. In eastern Colorado, the winter wheat is sown in November and harvested in July. In central California, the Christmas season is announced by the greening of the hills at the start of the rainy season. Rome has a similar climate, judging from my trip there last February.
