"times were better" In the US they were better (as long as you were white and middle class or better), but they were still rebuilding from WWII in GB and Europe. However, Asia was not competing in the 60s, Japan was just starting to revive then and in the 70s, the Japanese economy was a tailwind not a competitor. China was still in their Cultural Revolution, killing each other in the name of some cockamamy ideology or another. And of course Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia were all being bombed or invaded by US GIs or also killing each other over .... Yeah, times were better. Just like Trump will Make Us Great Again.
