The British Empire, which was the relevant body, did consider it an illegal action. They fought a war because of it, as I recall. They didn't win. The South did secede from the US. The US considered it an illegal action. They fought a war because of it. The South didn't win. In the EU. there is a procedure for a member state to withdraw. It isn't all that well defined, but it exists. So no, they can't bring Britain back legally. Do you see how this works?
