Lucius - Re: "DO you suspect that Intel is working on a low end microprocessor that will integrate videoand audio etc?"

Not exactly - Intel is working on integrating graphics functionality into a "chip set" - actually a "single chip-chip set".

I'm not completely certain, but I think Intel has two programs going in this arena - a low end version and a high end version.

I'm more familiar with the "high end" version, which will mate 2D AND 3D graphics with a high end Deschutes chip set. I'm not yet certain if Audio functions are part of these integrated chip sets, but I suspect we will know more in the first few months of next year.

The Graphics/Chip Set integration appeals to Intel - they can devote all their CPU design resources to performance issues without cluttering up the design with secondary (graphics/audio) functions. These functions can then be added to chip sets. They can sell basic CPUs which work with basic chip sets or integrated chip sets or third party chip sets.

As for yields, Intel seems to be "in a zone", on a par with Michael Jordan on one if his best days on the hardwood.

I think Intel's confidence in producing high yields of large die is leading them to integrate more functions in chip sets, add L2 cache to the CPU die itself, and go for truly aggressive devices like Willamette and Merced as well as Merced #2.
