John, we actually lived half time in San Diego 1998-2010 and I have been closely engaged in doing business with the Bay Area for more than 40 years.
But talking to other fellow European friends, they have absolutely no clue and are indeed victims to some combination of bash-USA propaganda and their own wishful thinking. And I am not talking of dummies here, have no dummy friends.

So, that said, your message is right on - again :)
