US national interest in the Persian Gulf has never been about oil dependence but rather about control of the oil as leverage against the rest of the world.

But that was during the cold war. Russian and Latin American oil production makes any meaningful leverage via Persian Gulf a half assed measure at best. It's time to leave ME to its own and move on. I like the Obama Doctrine much better.

For those who don't know, the Obama Doctrine is that the future of US lies with Asia Pacific and that ME is a lost cause. Rather than pouring blood and gold in a region that chants death to America, the US should focus on a region that has a highly positive view of America and is brimming with entrepreneurship. And they have the fastest growing economies to boot.
