The idea is to use our might to preserve stability in the region so that the oil keeps flowing and the world doesn't run short. That happened a time or two.

We prevent a geopolitical oil shortage, not a resource-based one.

I've seen no evidence of that, so far. Maybe it can. I think Iran could look out for its interests (taking over the entire region) without us around to protect Iraq and SA. I'd rather not find out. I'd rather the world get off of oil.
