He wrote the history of civilization, and it took his entire life. Who would have a better overview of human civilization than he had? Koan, do you know how many people have written "the history of civilization"? And how much their various histories differ from the Durant's version? You like his and obviously think it is the one and only. That is nice for you, you have a belief system within which you make sense of the world. But his history of civilization is far from the only or the last word for many many people.
