Maybe they actually use those taxpayer federal highway funds on the highways....how backward can you get? Those are best spent on union bribes.

You have to remember that Texas was under Democratic control for decades. So things like the highways were taken care of by dedicating certain taxes and fees for maintaining those roads. When Republicans took control, they started to divert funds to various pet projects. Rick Perry, for example, created a slush fund under his and Abbotts personal control. There is no transparency and money seems to flow in and no one is really sure where it goes. What money can be traced, there is no explanation of why it is used like it is and seems to go to companies whose owner has personal ties to the governor. Now the two of them swear everything is above board, but there is no actual paper trail.

It takes time for the roads to deteriorated and the infrastructure to crumble. But it has been happening at an increasing rate.

Not that the Democrats were all that great when they ran the state. But they did try to invest for the future. The Republicans are all about looting everything that isn't nailed down. They sometimes even take the nails...

Used to be toll roads existed to pay for their construction. Once they paid off the bonds, the tolls were lifted. Since the Republicans took over the state, that has changed. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is now a network of tolls roads. And they keep multiplying. There are areas of Dallas that are very hard to get to without driving on a toll road.
