It doesn't always work that way.....

I always offer my permit with my DL when asked for ID, except in a court house as I leave my weapon in the car for those trips.

Once while on a surveillance, I was approached by a local LEO. I offered both ID's and he immediately unsnapped and screamed, "where is the gun?" I screamed back, " stand down".....and I mean screamed as I wanted anybody nearby to hear the event. He handled his grip and I told him the weapon was in the map pocket. He then tried to pull the door open....and found it locked. He then tried to unlock it by reaching into the car from a partially opened drivers window, while still having one hand gripping his holstered weapon. I continued to scream at him to back off and I'll open the door. Once he realized he wasn't getting into the car, he settled down and I simply opened the door and let him reach for the K40.

It didn't get much better after that but no sense in prolonging the story.......

Shootie

It appears his mistake (48 hour rule in mind) was that he announced that he had a legal gun as he was complying with the order to produce his license.

1. Get your license, registration and CCW permit out before the officer approaches (normally a delay while they check your plate for theft, etc) and hold them between the fingers of your left hand.

2. Grip the top of the steering wheel with both hands before the officer approaches (engine off of course).

3. When asked, present your license and CCW together (this is law in my state) and put your left hand back on the steering wheel.

4. I've only been asked if the weapon is in the vehicle and never asked to produce it physically. If I were asked I'd probably refuse and tell the officer where he could find it, while keeping both my hands on the wheel.

5. I sometimes carry a rifle/shotgun in my trunk and would disclose those also.

If we used some common sense, like obeying police officers instead of confronting/challenging them, I suspect most of these incidents would never happen. Unfortunately we've created disrespect for authority in many of our young people, which leads to problems.
