No doubt, politicians are motivated. Imagine, spewing a trillion in cash with your political friends! They love it, and you surely get a spurt of spending. It does look good

But your point was exemplified by the Obama stimulus, where Christina Romer announced only a year in that the stimulative effect was over. I about croaked! It's over? Hell, it hasn't done anything AT ALL!

No one even remembers we added 5% to our national debt for absolutely no meaningful value at all.
