The Compaq $699 4212ES is a GREAT news for INTC short. Obviously, Intel has given up their wish to turn down the lower-lower-and-lower price requests from Compaq.

Each Presario 4212ES sold is just the same as another potential PII customer disappeared from the market. Even nicer for long term INTC short is that these cacheless PMMX-166 systems, from HP and Compaq, users will give free advice to their friends from buying another "Intel Inside" because their Intel systems are so s-l-o-w.

Gateway 2000 is in desperate status to offer 16MB for their PII 233 system. It indicates that GTW holiday sales must be terrible.

Both news said that Intel margin is getting squeezed..............

Praveen - Re: "excess Intel chips somehow - must have been
given free to Compaq"

No - Intel actually paid Compaq to take these chips off their hands.
