Sorry to hear you have missing files.

Everyone's needs are different, but I use Macrium or Acronis and do full backups. I was using Acronis, but my 2014 version has had issues with Win10 and I switched to the free version of Macrium which works fine with Win10.

I only make images when I install a new program and for personal files I'll drag and drop the appropriate folders to another drive periodically to make copies of them.

Also and I'm in the minority on this, but I don't download my email and instead read it online. For me it's simpler and when restoring an image, I don't have to worry about my email.
