Recoveh finally got to the end of the trail, 4 hours later. I may have inadvertently interrupted when I hit the Space key to get out of screen saver. I found my missing file but its unrecoverable. Here was Recoveh's assessment:

This is some real BS. I suspect that the recent driver update or whatever simply overwrote my file. The timing matches and I'm pretty sure I didn't delete the file. I forgot about the other file, will go back and look for that among the results, also see if I can aim Recoveh at the external drive only.

p.s. If anybody is interested, Stage 1 of the program goes through and identifies all the deleted files (most of them are .gifs and electronic fragments from deleted emails. This took 4 hours for 156G. Stage 2 was Damage Assessment or something, took about 2 minutes. Stage 3 was Recovery Assessment or something, took 1 minute. The program goes through the 3 stages of each disk. It said I had 4 disks but I only have my hard disk and the external drive. No CD or flash was plugged in.
