A think tank or writer accusing someone of falsifying data doesn't quite rise to the level of a political witch hunt (even if it isn't true, which isn't solidly established) the way attacks from politicians combined with attorney generals investigating disagreement as a crime. Its proper to look for problems with data in science Koch, Exxon, etc. have no ability to bring anyone up on charges. If claims by them (or from groups funded by them, or from groups not funded by them) are wrong the proper response is to refute the claims.
