Michael: Thanks for your input. It is true that Jardines decided to delist from HKSE after the later did not give in to Jardine's request for some special treatment regarding disclosure (can't recall exactly what that was). Since then, the whole family of stocks were struggling to even get up to their book values. There was one time when the rumors has it that they may be re-listed on the HKSE again, their stocks all shot up. IMO, it would definitely do them good to be listed in HK. Their name is much more well known in HK than any other market and HK has many investors and fund managers willing to include them in their portfolios if they were traded in the local market for liquididty reasons. The recent slump in their prices and then a surprise surge in the last few days may indicate that they are more serious than ever in trying to do that. Just pure speculation on my part!. I own some Jardine Strategic Holdings stock which is trading about 40% below their book value. The book value as of 11/30/97 was $4.33 per share and stock price in the $2.50-2.60 range.

The ADR is coded JDSHY on the OTC market, two shares per one ADR, closed at $5.05 and the Jardine Matheson Group is coded JARLY, at year-end at $5.00.

I think they are good candidates for turn-around Asian stocks for 1998. Two things must happen to support that: They make their stocks easier to trade in HK and continue to increase involvement in China.

It is 1998 now in Shanghai (as I type) but still 1997 in most part of the US. Good luck to all who have not crossed over to the new year yet.
