>I was under the impression that making money was *always* important when running a business and/or investing.>

Eventually, yes.

>If you offer something for free, people will use it, maybe even more than once. Doesn't mean that you're going to make money, doing it, though.>

Among other possibilities: Ad revenue, E-commerce, linking to other MSFT sites....

BTW, YHOO was the best performing stock in 1997. They're "free."

So, what is this Hotmail, free email along with all the spam you can eat? Sounds like Bill's kind of thing, another way to put out the "truth" according to Microsoft. I don't exactly know what free email buys you in the internet world, you gotta have an ISP to begin with, but who knows. Another outlet for Microsoft's cash hoard, guess they bought back enough stock to cover for a while.

Mordantly yours, Dan.

>>>Hotmail is a huge community of RECURRING users.

Reminds me of the old joke from the '30s: 'We're losing money on the individual pieces, but we're making it up on volume!'

Still, I'm sure msft has a plan. Like, e.g., hotmail will require IE or something. Just guessing.
