just busy going to work taken care of family to really pay attention I briefly worked for the State of Alaska beginning 1970. The waste I witnessed was the beginning of my conversion to old line liberalism. Later I had the time and the means to indulge a fascination with the spectrum of economic thought and how the various schools align with historical experience. It's like the nose on my face that tightly constrained government promoting and allowing free enterprise is the ONLY route to a decent society maintaining that rising tide. Only recently has a horrifying realization penetrated my sorry skull. Most Americans, smart and stupid, decent and not, had no exposure to the thinking that once fed that superior American zeitgeist. Instead, sordid ideas quite at odds. Evil people with the temerity to label themselves liberals or "progressives" own the commanding heights, have for some time. America is in for a nasty ride. Too few, fresh or weathered, understand why.
