The domestic household electrical appliance market will continue a steady growth next year amid a deepened restructuring of supply and demand, according to today's China Daily.

Statistics from the Internal Trade Ministry indicate that many domestic brands, even famous ones, are facing a serious over-supply problem.

Duing the second half of 1997, 55.3 percent of the 36 kinds of household electrical appliances saw supplies exceed demands. However, larger stockpiles do not discourage investment, as showed by 1996's color TV market.

Urban residents will aim at high-grade new appliance to replace their outdated ones, while rural demands include more varieties expanding from TVs, freezers and washing machines to air-conditioners, audio and video equipment.

It is estimated that color TV sales will reach 16.4 million sets in 1998, a five percent increase over this year, with home-made TVs dominating the market.

About 7.2 million sets of refrigerators will be sold next year with a seven percent hike in total sales. Well-known brands such as Haier, Rongsheng and Xinfei will still be the top sellers.

Washing machines will have a similar sales growth of 9.3 percent to stand at 17.6 million next year. Air-conditioners, VCD and personal computers will all witness a growth exceeding 20 percent in sales next year.

VCD sales will expand a stunning 29 percent. However, prices will be cut facing the threat from DVD development.

Moreover, personal computers sales are expected to reach 2.5 million sets in 1998.
